Had it passed, anyone convicted of bringing drugs into the United States above a modest threshold -- more than two ounces of marijuana, for example -- would have automatically been imprisoned for life. Repeat offenders would be executed.
Ok, aside from the horrifyingly stupid prospect of putting someone to death for a non-violent crime that endangers nobody, how does this even make sense? If you're put in prison for life for the first offense, how are there ever going to be any repeat offenders? The lack of rational thought demonstrated by this bill is almost as much of a concern as the moral depravity of executing non-violent criminals.
